The Porcupine and Goanna Tribes

53 0

The Porcupine and Goanna Tribes were friends and the men would often hunt together, even though the Porcupine Tribe were very proud and did everything they were supposed to and the Goannas were a very sly, cunning, and lazy lot.

There came a time when food was scarce, so they had to walk, for many days to hunt for food.

Finally, the Porcupines made a kill, the Goannas, seeing the chance of free food said, "You have a rest while we prepare the food, you have done your share."

Soon the Porcupines were fast asleep and as soon as the Goannas saw this they loaded the food and proceeded to steal it away.

Porcupines woke as the Goannas were disappearing into the trees.

Seeing this they jumped up and grabbed a burning stick from the fire and chased the Goannas, hitting them on the back, leaving a pattern that is still seen there today.

please note...

I have asked around to get confirmation on what I was told growing up about why Echidnas are called Porcupines by the Indigenous people of Australia...below are copies of 2 of the replies I received...

1st reply...

It's what the colonists called them when they came, so we thought that is what they were called in English...

But each Language group has their own name for them of course...

2nd reply...

Hi Shirley, porcupine totally different. Just a miscommunication that’s all. Wiradjuri word for Echidna is Guwandiyala.

my source regarding the question on Porcupines is...
